Imam al-Ghazali in Khutbah - 16 May 2025

IMAM AL-GHAZALI, ETC. IN TODAY'S FRIDAY SERMON 16 May 2025

“Teachers are likened to the CONTINUERS of the MESSIAH OF THE PROPHET SAW, a person who is willing to take on the responsibility of educating and teaching his students, nurturing, teaching ETHICS and PURE VALUES, shaping MORALS and PERSONALITY in order to develop human dignity as the Prophet SAW said: “Indeed, I was not sent except to perfect morals.” (Ahmad)”

"According to IMAM AL-GHAZALI, teachers not only convey knowledge, but also LEAD THE SOULS OF STUDENTS towards goodness and MA’RIFATULLAH. A Rabbani teacher is a teacher who is characterized by human dignity, who masters and spreads knowledge to students, and faithfully fulfills the responsibility of guiding humans to find the light of truth, so that humans DEVOTE THEMSELVES solely to Allah SWT."

That is one of the paragraphs in today's sermon text.

It is clear that a teacher (mursyid, mu'allim, sheikh, murabbi) etc. does not just try to bring his students to KNOWING GOD, but further to MA’RIFATULLAH, . If we continue the teachings of Hujjatul Islam Imam al-Ghazali in his books, especially the main (induk) book Ihya' 'Ulumuddin and in the carrying sanad tariq, a teacher must try to bring his students to LOVE GOD or loving Allah (MAHABBATULLAH). This is one of the main tasks of a teacher, according to the level of their respective abilities. Insya-Allah this desire will be achieved if the teacher has KNOWN GOD, and then has MA;RIFATULLAH, and then has reached the status of MAHABBATULLAH.

The first paragraph states that teachers are tasked with instilling etiquette, PURE VALUES, MORALS and PERSONALITY. The second paragraph relates teachers as someone who CHARACTERIZES HUMAN NOBLENESS. Of course, the person who educates must already have the added value of etiquette, PURE VALUES, MORALS and PERSONALITY. Otherwise, what happens is just the transfer of information/knowledge/data without a “soul”/“spirit”. 160525
